The SUPPORT Foundation returns with the annual Khon Performance 2018
Featuring “The Allegiance of Phiphek” episode on November 3rd – December 5th, 2108
HM Queen Sirikit under the Reign of King Rama IX graciously appointed HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to represent Her Majesty the Queen at the preview of The Khon Performance 2018 by the Foundation for the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques (SUPPORT Foundation) in the episode “The Allegiance of Phiphek” at Main Hall, Thailand Cultural Centre on Tuesday 30 October 2018.
Thanpuying Charungjit Teekara, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of King Rama IX’s Private Secretary and Chairperson of The Khon Performance Committee of The SUPPORT Foundation shared details of the upcoming performance “Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of King Rama IX has graciously insisted in the preservation of Thailand’s precious treasure – Khon performance which is considered a national performing arts for the past decade, The SUPPORT Foundation has produced 7 episodes of Khon Ramakien HM Queen Sirikit under the Reign of King Rama IX has officially endorsed in the annual Khon Performance which is Thailand’s highest form of theatrical arts in order to preserve the ancient craftsmanship of Khon masks, costume embroidery, gold and silversmith, and makeup arts as well as to open up opportunity for the new generations to learn to appreciate exquisite tradition.
The SUPPORT Foundation has created greater awearness and received welcoming feedbacks for additional rounds of performances from the successfully organized shows in the past with 7 episodes from the Thai Ramakien epic including “Prommas” in 2007 and 2009, “Nang Loi” in 2010, “Suek Maiyarap” in 2011, “Jong Tanon” in 2012, “The Battle Of Kumbhakarn: Mokasak” in 2013, “The Battle Of Indrajit: Nagabas” in 2014, and “The Battle Of Indrajit: Prommas” in 2015. The SUPPORT Foundation of HM Queen Sirikit under the Reign of King Rama IX has selected the Ramakien’s episode called “The Allegiance of Phiphek” for the annual performance of 2018 to emphasize on the loyalty of Thais toward King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun as well as the importance of honesty and morality.
Meanwhile Ajarn Pramet Boonyachai, the director explained that the script is an integrated, modernized, and concise work from the epic penned by King Rama I, King Rama II and King Rama VI, which perfectly instills all the Khon Characteristics. The episode is separated into Act 1 Subin Nimit consisting of Part 1 Phiphek Exile, Part 2 Phiphek bid farewell to wife and daughter, Part 3 The Exile and Act 2 consisting of Part 1 Meet Nil-aek – The Monkey Commander, Part 2 The Alligiance, Part 3 Montho pledge the end of war, Part 4 The Battlefield and Part 5 Revive from Kabilaphat Spear.
The stunning scene highlights include the revamped royal hallway of Longka with the addition of beautiful royal throne, the new scene of Phiphek removing his crown for Treechada to pass on to Thotsakan, the beautifully executed scene of Phiphek departing Longka by boat complemented by modern techniques of reels, slings, lighting, and sound to keep all audiences on the edge of their seats throughout the show.
Main characters are performed by front-roll performers from Office of Music and Drama – Fine Arts Department, Bunditpatanasilpa Institute and The College of Dramatic Arts Bangkok along with young talented casts selected from students of The College of Dramatic Arts and other education institutions countrywide via the audition for main characters including Phra(male protagonist), Nang(female protagonist), Yak(giant) and Ling(monkey) held in 2017 as part of the promotion for the young generations to help preserve the national art and tradition.
The annual Khon Performance 2018 by the SUPPORT Foundation in “The Allegiance of Phiphek” episode will run from November 3rd until December 5th, 2018 at Main Hall, Thailand Cultural Centre.
